3. DRIVERS

The Excel Workbook on drivers, which covers driving licence holding and on the availability of cars, contains five data sheets. These are:

Contents of the data sheets are as follows

Sheet Car access

The block A.6 to J.51 contains data from the National Travel survey on the percentages of all adults, men and women who live in households with a car and who are the main driver, other driver or non-driver in a household with a car.  These data are for 1975/76 to 2007.

Block A.58 to I.77 contains data on the proportion of households with no car, one car and 2 or more cars, and the average number of cars per household and cars per adult.

Block A.82 to O.119 contains data on household car ownership by type of area.

Block A126 to E.195 gives the percentages of households with 0, 1, 2, and 3 cars.

Sheet Driving licences

The block A.6 to O.51 contains data from the National Travel Survey on the percentages of all adults, men and women who hold full car driving licences, by age of the person and for years 1965 to 2007.  Ages are mainly listed in 10 year bands.

The block A.93 to AH.105 contains data from Transport Statistics GB 2008 Table 9.18 and earlier editions on the number of tests for car driving tests and the tests passed by men and women.

Sheet Older drivers

The block A.5 to O.50 contains data from special tabulations from the National Travel Survey on the percentages of all adults, men and women who hold full car driving licences, by age of the person and for survey years 1995/97 to 2005.  The ages are listed in 5 year blocks from 50 to 85 and over.

Block A.77 to D.121 gives the population and number of driving licences for people aged 70+ for the years 1975 to 2007.

Sheet Offences

The block A.6 to Q.26 contains data on the number of offences for which drivers were found guilty at all courts, 1975 to 1990 for England and Wales.

The block A.40 to Q.54 contains data on the number of offences for which fixed penalty notices were issued, 1975 to 1990 for England and Wales.

The block A.70 to Q.87 contains data on the number of offences for which written warnings were issued, 1975 to 1990 for England and Wales.

The block A.118 to AG.151 contains data on the number of offences for which drivers were found guilty at all courts, fixed penalty notices were issued, or written warnings were issued, 1975 to 2006 for England and Wales.  Of these, block A.118 to AE.124 gives the derived number of guilty findings, fixed penalty notices and written warnings and block A.135 to AE.151 gives the derived total number of offences by category of offence.

These data are from Transport Statistics GB 1975-85 Tables 2.54, 2.55 and 2.56; 1978 Tables 2.59, 2.60 and 2.61; 1991 Tables 2.61, 2.62 and 2.63; 1997 Table 4.22; and 2006 Table 8.7.

Block A.156 to AE.173 gives the number of breath tests for drink driving, the number of screening tests that are positive, the number of evidential tests and the number of these tests that are positive, for England and Wales for the period 1975 to 2004.

Sheet risk to others

Block A.4 to F.35 gives the number of pedestrians in 2005 killed by cars, tabulated by drivers age and gender.  This is a special tabulation run by DfT Transport Statistics.

Block A.87 to AG.116 gives the risk of killing a pedestrian per driver and per mile driven.
