4. THE ROAD NETWORK
This section on the road network contains only one main Excel Workbook, named "Roads". Detailed information on road lengths in Great Britain and in the local authority areas of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, downloaded from the DfT web site and from Northern Ireland Transport Statistics, is described in Section 13 ‘Local authority data’, and held in an Excel Workbook called "Road lengths".
The Workbook Roads contains two data sheets. These are:
- Sheet GB details length; and
- Sheet road condition E&W.
Contents of the data sheets are as follows
Sheet GB details length
The block A.5 to S.16 contains data from Transport Statistics GB on the lengths of various classes of road from 1960 to 2007. The classes of road are motorways, trunk roads (including and excluding motorways), principal roads (excluding motorways), 'B' or class 2, 'C' or class 3, 'b' and 'C' classified non-principal roads, unclassified roads, all minor roads and all roads.
Block A.18 to S.21 lists the lengths of motorways and non-motorway dual carriageway roads from 1960 to 2007.
Block Y.5 to BA.51 contains data from Transport Statistics GB on the lengths of various classes of urban or built-up and rural or non built-up roads from 1970 to 2007. The definitions of roads changed from built-up to urban and from non built-up to rural in 1993, at which some roads changed from being listed as urban to being listed as rural.
Block Y.75 to AV.100 contains data from Transport Statistics GB on the lengths of dual and single carriageway urban or built-up and rural or non built-up roads of various classes from 1970 to 2007. The definitions of roads changed from built-up to urban and from non built-up to rural in 1993, at which some roads changed from being listed as urban to being listed as rural.
Block A.33 to S.118 contains historic data on road lengths from 1909 to 2006.
Sheet road condition E&W
Block A.5 to E.35 gives the defects index of road condition, relative to 1977, of built-up and non-built-up Principal and unclassified roads for 1977 to 2006.
Block H.5 to P.36 gives the defects index of road condition, relative to 1977, of trunk roads (to 2001), built-up and non-built-up Principal, classified and unclassified roads, and all non-trunk roads, for 1977 to 2007. These data are from the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey for 1984 to 2007 and TSGB 2007 Table 7.17 for 1977 to 1983. The 2007 survey only included England and a limited number of types of road.
Block R.5 to AA.36 gives data from the 2007 survey for England only, for years 1997 to 2007.
Block A.43 to R.171 reproduces the diagrams that form Table 7.17 of TSGB 2007 and that show changes in the defects index of road condition for various classes of road.
