6. ACCIDENTS AND CASUALTIES
This section contains six Excel Workbooks. These are:
6.1 Accidents and rates
This Workbook contains two data sheets, 'Sheet road class' and 'Sheet Historic series'.
Contents of the data sheets are as follows
Sheet road class
Block A.4 to AO.122 gives the numbers of fatal accidents, fatal and serious accidents (KSI), and accidents of all severity for various classes of road for the period 1970 to 2007. It also provides the accident rate per unit traffic for some roads (the rate is for all accidents; rates for fatal and KSI can be found by scaling the rate by the number of accidents).
Note: The accident rates per unit traffic recorded in Road Accidents GB 1980 Table 3 are not consistent with those in Road Accidents GB 1985 Table 3 and Transport Statistics GB 1977-87 Table 2.51. Both are listed in the data sheet, but only the former are used, as they appear to be more consistent with rates for later years.
Block A.143 to U.148 provides the total numbers of accidents by severity for the period 1970 to 2006, for all roads.
Block A.177 to AO.234 gives the accident rates per unit traffic for all accidents, fatal and serious accidents, and fatal accidents, for various classes of road, for the period 1970 to 2006
Sheet Historic series
Block A.6 to G.89 gives the numbers of accidents for 1926 to 2007 by severity.
Block J.6 to L.55 gives the number of accidents for 1903 to 1950 from Plowden ‘The Motor Car and Politics’
