7. PASSENGER TRAVEL

Contents of the data sheets are as follows
Sheet pass transport by mode
Block A.6 to I.63 gives the passenger kilometres by mode - car and van, bus and coach, motorcycles, pedal cycles, rail and domestic air - since 1952. The data are from Transport Statistics GB 2008 Table 1.1.
Sheet personal travel
All data on this sheet are from the National Travel Surveys 1975/76. 1985/86, 1992/94, 1995/97, 1998/00, 2002, 2003. 2004, 2005 and 2006. Travel data from the 2007 survey had not been released at the beginning of May 2009.
Block A.5 to N.14 gives the number of trips (journeys) per person by purpose and mode during 2004, block A.20 to N.29 gives the corresponding data for 2005 and block A.36 to N.45 gives the corresponding data for 2006. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2005, 2006 and 2007, Table 1.4. Note that the results of the National Travel Survey were re-analysed before the publication of the figures for 2005, and these are not comparable to previous published results.
Blocks Q.5 to AD.14, Q.20 to AD.29 and Q.36 to AD.45 give the corresponding distance per person per year by purpose and mode, for 2004, 2005 and 2006. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2005, 2006 and 2007, Table 1.5. Note that the results of the National Travel Survey were re-analysed before the publication of the figures for 2005, and these are not comparable to previous published results.
Block A.54 to M.93 gives the number of trips per person per year by mode for surveys since 1975/76. The results of the survey in 1995/97 and subsequent surveys have been re-weighted, and both the original and revised results are given. Block A.80 to M.93 gives a best estimate of comparable results since 1975/76.
Block A.97 to O.122 gives the average distance per person per year by mode since 1975/76.
Sheet travel by purpose
Block A.7 to N.23 gives the trips per person per year by purpose since 1975/76.
Block Q.7 to AC.23 gives the distance per person per year by purpose since 1975/76.
Block AH.7 to AT.23 gives the hours per person per year spent travelling by purpose since 1975/76.
Block A.45 to N.61 gives the average trip length in miles by purpose since 1975/76
Block Q.45 to AC.61 gives the average trip duration in minutes by purpose since 1975/76.
These data are from the National Travel Survey 2006 Report Tables 4.1 and 4.2.
Sheet travel by age and gender
Block A.5 to N.62 gives the percentage of trips in 2006 by mode and age group for all persons, males and females.
Block A.72 to N.113 gives the number of trips per year in 2006 by mode and age group for all persons, males and females.
Block A.124 to M.148 gives the distance per person per year by mode and age group for males and females.
Block A.156 to M.209 gives the percentage of trips in 2006 by purpose and age group for all persons, males and females.
Block A.221 to M.276 gives the number of trips in 2006 by purpose and age group for all persons, males and females.
Sheet travel to work
Block A.5 to N.47 gives the percentage of journeys to work by mode in the English regions, Scotland and Wales for 2004, block Q.5 to AD.47 gives the corresponding figures for 2005, block AG.5 to AT.47 for 2006 and block AY.5 to BR.47 for 2007. These are from Transport Statistics GB 2005 to 2008 Table 1.8.
Block A.52 to N.67 gives the percentage of journeys to work by mode for Great Britain since 1994.
Block A.76 to L.117 gives the percentage of journeys to work that take less than 20, 40, 60 and 90 minutes in the English regions, Scotland and Wales for 2004, block O.76 to Z.117 gives the corresponding figures for 2005, block AC.76 to AN.117 for 2006 and AY.76 to BN.117 for 2007. These are from Transport Statistics GB 2005 to 2008 Table 1.9.
Sheet central London;
Block A.5 to AK.23 gives the number of journeys into central London between 0700 and 1000 hours by mode since 1975. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 1996 Table 1.3 and 2007 and 2008 Table 1.6.
Sheet journeys public transport;
Block A.5 to X.78 gives the number of journeys by public transport in Great Britain since 1950. This is from Transport Statistics GB 2008 Table 1.2.
Sheet casualty rates by mode
Block A.5 to W.49 gives the casualty rates per passenger kilometre for the main modes since 1987. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2000 Table 1.6 and 2008 Table 1.7.
Block A.65 to T.121 gives the average trip length by mode and the derived risk per passenger trip.
Sheet long distance
This data sheet gives information on long distance travel (trips over 50 miles long) for the periods 2004-06 and 2003-05, from the National Travel Survey 2006 Report, Tables 3.4, 3.9, 4.4 and 4.5 and the 2005 Report Tables 3.4, 3.10 and 4.5.
For 2004-06, block A.5 to M.13 gives the percentage of trips by purpose in various length bands. Block A.26 to K.34 gives the percentage of trips by mode in various length bands. Block A.46 to M.63 gives the number of trips by length and by mode of travel.
Block P.5 to AB.63 gives the corresponding data for 2003-05.
Sheet overseas travel
Block A.6 to W.25 gives the number of overseas visits to and from the United Kingdom by mode since 1987. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 1996 Table 1.6 and 2007 and 2008 Table 1.10.
Block A.42 to K.64 gives the number of visits by air to the United Kingdom in 2004 by the area of residence of the visitor. Block N.42 to Y.64 gives similar data for 2005, AB.42 to AM.64 for 2006 and AP.42 to BA.64 for 2007. Block A.54 to BA.63 gives corresponding data for visits by air from the United Kingdom by the area visited, for 2004 to 2007. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2005 to 2008 Table 1.11.
Block A.78 to R.139 gives the number of journeys by sea or Channel tunnel to and from the United Kingdom in 2004 by area visited or area of residence of the visitor, and type of vehicle on board. Block U.78 to AL.139 gives similar data for 2005, A.150 to R.210 for 2006 and AE.150 to AQ.210 for 2007. These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2005 and 2006 Table 1.12, and 2007 and 2008 Table 1.11.
Block A.223 to V.278 gives the numbers of accompanied passenger vehicles passing through UK ports between 1989 and 2007, on various routes. These data are from TSGB 2008 Table 5.6.
Block A.293 to V.324 gives the corresponding numbers of passenger movements through UK ports on various routes.
Block A.342 to R.367 gives the percentage of all foreign holidays by UK residents that are at particular destinations. These data are from Social Trends 2005 Table 13.16; 2006 Table 13.13; 2007 Table 13.6; and2008 Table 13.10.
