This Excel Workbook contains six data sheets. These are:

  • Sheet moved and lifted;
  • Sheet by vehicle type;
  • Sheet by commodity;
  • Sheet by haul length;
  • Sheet by mode of working; and
  • Sheet Forecasts.

Contents of the data sheets are as follows

Sheet moved and lifted

Block A.5 to G.60 gives the tonne km of domestic freight moved by mode in Great Britain since 1953.  The data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 Table 4.1.

Block J.5 to O.60 gives the tonnes of domestic freight lifted by mode in Great Britain since 1953.  The data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 Table 4.1.

Block R.5 to W.60 gives the haul length of freight by mode in Great Britain since 1953, derived from the data on freight lifted and moved.

Block Z.5 to AD.31 give indices for GDR, freight moved by all modes and freight moved by road, since 1980.  These data are from DfT Road Freight Statistics 2005 Table 1.1.

Sheet by vehicle type

Block A.7 to J.36 gives the tonne km of freight moved by vehicle type.  These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 and 2008 Table 4.4; 1996 Table 4.1; 1991 Table 2.34; Road Freight Statistics 2005 Tab 1.12 and the annual Transport of Goods by Road in Great Britain, for data on 3.5 to 7.5 tonne and 7.5 to 17 tonne rigid HGVs.

Block L.7 to U.36 gives the tonnes of freight lifted by vehicle type.  These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 and 2008 Table 4.5; 1996 Table 4.2; 1991 Table 2.33; Road Freight Statistics 2005 Tab 1.11 and the annual Transport of Goods by Road in Great Britain, for data on 3.5 to 7.5 tonne and 7.5 to 17 tonne rigid HGVs.

Block W.7 to AF.36 gives the derived haul length by vehicle type. 

 

Sheet by commodity

Block A.7 to F.35 gives the tonne km of freight moved by road since 1980, categorised by commodity.  Commodities are split into four broad groups.  Data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 and 2008 Table 4.4; 1996 Table 4.1; and 1991 Table 2.34.

Block I.7 to N.35 gives the tonnes of freight lifted by road since 1980, categorised by commodity.  Commodities are split into four broad groups.  Data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 and 2008 Table 4.5; 1996 Table 4.2; and 1991 Table 2.33.

Block Q.7 to V.35 gives the derived average haul lengths for freight by road categorised by commodity.  Commodities are split into four broad groups. 

Sheet by haul length

Block A.7 to F.14 gives the tonnes of freight lifted in 2002 by haul length and commodity.  Block J.7 to O.14 gives similar data for 2005.  The data are from Transport of Goods by Road GB 2002 Table 17 and Road Freight Statistics 2005 Table 1.26.

Sheet by mode of working

Block A.9 to D.36 gives the tonne km of road freight by mode of working (own account or public haulage), since 1980.  These data are from Road Freight Statistics 2005 Table 1.10; Transport of goods by road GB 2001 Table 1;  Transport Statistics GB 1996 Table 4.1 and 1991 Table 2.34.

Block G.9 to J.36 gives the tonnes of road freight by mode of working (own account or public haulage), since 1980.  These data are from Road Freight Statistics 2005 Table 1.10; Transport of goods by road GB 2001 Table 1;  Transport Statistics GB 1996 Table 4.2 and 1991 Table 2.33.

Block M.9 to P.36 gives the derived haul lengths for road freight by mode of working (own account or public haulage), since 1980. 

Sheet Forecasts

Block A.7 to K.13 gives the forecast of tonne km of freight moved by road up to the year 2025, for the 1997 DETR traffic forecast.  This comes from Transport Statistics GB 1997 Table 4.8.
