This Excel Workbook contains three data sheets. These are:

  • Sheet all roads;
  • Sheet  by road type; and
  • Sheet empty running.

Contents of the data sheets are as follows

Sheet all roads

Block A6 to R.35 gives the vehicle km of traffic on all roads categorised by type of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) (rigid/articulated, number of axles), plus traffic by light vans and all motor vehicles, since 1980.  The data are from Transport Statistics GB 2006 and 2008 Tab 7.2; 2003 Tab 4.9; 1993 Tab 4.7; and 1991 Tab 2.1.  Note that from 1992 the method of counting 2 axle vans was changed to avoid large light vans being counted as HGVs.  This reduced the recorded traffic of 2 axle HGVs by about 30 percent.  Block R.6 to R.32 gives an estimate of traffic by all HGVs counted as had been done up to 1992.

Block V.6 to X.35 gives the derived percentages of traffic on all roads that are HGVs and light vans.

Sheet  by road type

Block A.9 to G.21 gives the vehicle km of traffic of vans, various types of HGVs, and all motor vehicles on motorways since 1980.  These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2008 Table 7.4 and the corresponding tables in previous editions.

Blocks A.28 to G.40, A.47 to G.59, A.66 to G.78 and A.85 to G.97 give the corresponding data for non built-up major roads, built-up major roads, all minor roads and all roads respectively.

Block J.7 to O.78 gives the derived percentage of vehicle miles by vans and various types of HGV on motorways, non built-up major roads, built-up major roads and all minor roads.

Block Z.7 to AE.97 gives the derived percentage of vans and various types of HGV traffic in the total vehicle flow on motorways, non built-up major roads, built-up major roads and all minor roads.

Sheet empty running

Block A.5 to X.13 gives the percentage of vehicle miles empty since 1984 for various types of HGV.  These data are from Road Freight Statistics 2005 Table 16 and Transport of Goods by Road GB 1995 Table 7.

Block A.19 to X.26 gives the percentage of vehicle miles empty since 1984 for HGVs of all types carrying various categories of commodity.
