9. ENERGY USED BY TRANSPORT

The Excel Workbook on energy used by transport contains three data sheets. These are:

  • Sheet UK inland consumption;
  • Sheet EU data United Kingdom; and
  • Sheet vehicle fuel consumption.

Contents of the data sheets are as follows

Sheet UK inland consumption

Block A.7 to K.19 gives data on final consumption by sector, plus conversion and distribution losses, since 1980.  This is from DTI Energy Brief 2006 and BERR Energy Brief 2008.

Block A.29 to R.36 gives similar data since 1990 for EU Energy & Transport in Figures 2007 Table 2.6.26.  The total final energy consumption agrees with the DTI figures to within 10 percent.

Block A.44 to J.50 gives the production of primary fuels since 1980, from the DTI Energy Brief 2006 and BERR Energy Brief 2008.

Block A.57 to AN.63 gives the fuel used by road transport since 1970, from Transport Statistics GB 2008 and 2005 Table 3.1; 1993 Table 2.1; 1974-84 Table1.24; and 1969-79 Table 1.31

Block A.69 to AN.87 gives the fuel used by individual transport modes, including railways, water transport and aviation, since 1973.  These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2007 & 2005 Table 3.1; 1995 Table 2.1; and 1973-83 Table 1.22

Block A.115 to Q.128 gives the energy consumption by transport mode and source of energy since 1994.  These data are from Transport Statistics GB 2005 and 2008 Table 3.2.

Sheet EU data United Kingdom

This sheet reproduces Table 2.6.26 Energy Statistics for the United Kingdom, from EU Energy & Transport in Figures 2007.

Sheet vehicle fuel consumption

Block A.7 to K.35 gives the fuel consumption of cars and heavy goods vehicles in service, over the period 1993 to 2006.  This data is from Transport Statistics GB 2005 and 2007, Table 3.4, derived from the National Travel Survey.  Note - the fuel consumption for cars does not agree with the fuel consumption derived from petroleum used by the car fleet and car traffic, nor is it consistent with DfT figures for the fuel consumption of new cars.

Block A.52 to AE.79 and two inset graphs gives the fuel consumption of new cars, excluding four wheel drives, from 1977 to 2006, with diesel and petrol cars separated from 1997.  This data is from Transport Statistics GB 2005 and 2008, Table 3.5.  Values on the graphs can be read by positioning the cursor on the line.  Block A.82 to F.113 tabulates these values.

Block A.122 to Z.150 gives data on CO2 emissions from company cars and privately owned cars.  This data is from the SMMT Annual CO 2 Report - 2006 Market.

Block A.171 to M.195 gives the numbers of cars since 1985, and company and privately owned cars since 2001, that use petrol and diesel fuel.  This data is from TSGB 2008-04 Table 9.4; 2003-1996 Table 3.4; 1991 Table 2.27; 1975-85 Table 2.20; 1970-80 Table 2.21; data on company cars is from Vehicle Licensing Statistics 2006 Tab 1.10; 2001-05 Table 5.

Block A.202 to O.211 gives the numbers since 1996 of company and private cars in total and that use diesel fuel.  These data is from SMMT Motor Industry Facts.

Block A.219 to N.233 gives the number of new cars since 1996 that use petrol, diesel and a number of other propulsion systems.  These data are from DfT Vehicle Licensing Statistics 2006 Tables 1.19 and 1.20 and 2007 Tables 10 & 12.

Block A.242 to AN.256 gives the fuel consumption of the car fleet derived from the overall use of petroleum by cars and car traffic vehicle kilometres.
